Rationalization effects of tariff reductions

چکیده

We analyze a panel of 230 Canadian manufacturing industries to investigate whether trade liberalization promotes efficiency through increased scale. During the six years following the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, Canadian manufacturing exhibited substantial rationalization – a decline in the number of plants accompanied by increases in output per plant. We find that the bilateral tariff reductions had opposing effects on scale. Contraction induced by lower Canadian tariffs largely offset the 10% scale increase caused by U.S. tariff cuts. The observed increase in scale arose due to currency depreciation, compositional shifts towards high-scale industries, and undercounting of small establishments.  1999 Elsevier Science B.V. We specifically compare two representative tariff-reduction formulas: the "fixed-amount" and the "uniform percentage" reductions. The uniform percentag...

Import Response to Tariff Reductions in an African Sample

Policy-makers and analysts are often concerned with the effect of tariff reductions, as part of trade liberalisation, on the volume of imports, and in particular adverse effects on domestic import-competing sectors. Using a panel of establishments from the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), I study the impact of the 1991 trade liberalization episode in India on the employment share of women. Contrary to the predictions of a taste-based discrimination model, I find that establishments exposed to larger output tariff reductions and import competition reduced the share of female workers. I also find that inpu...

The identification strategy relies on combining information on initial regional labour and product market structure with the exogenous tariff reduction schedule over four three-year periods. We distin...
